886 Boysen Ave, San Luis Obispo, CA
History of the Dental Office at 886 Boysen Ave, SLO CA
Dr. Warren Quist relocated to San Luis Obispo after serving as an army dentist during the Korean War and working at Camp Roberts. He commissioned John Ross, an accomplished local architect and lecturer at Cal Poly, to design a three-suite medical building on what was then the outskirts of town. The mid-century modern office building was exceptional because the treatment rooms had their own private garden view, which acted as a privacy fence between the parking lot and the office. The small garden created a naturally calming ambiance for patients to gaze out of the floor-to-ceiling windows during their dental visit.
The building was completed and Dr. Warren Quist opened his new SLO dental office in 1959. He occupied 886 Boysen while the other two suits were rented out to other area dentists. In 1986, Dr. Stephen Quist, Warren's son, joined him, and together they converted the doctor's personal office into a hygiene room to accommodate the addition of another dentist. In 1993, Dr. Warren Quist retired, and Dr. Stephen Quist skillfully continued to run the dental practice as the sole dentist. Both Dr. Quist’s were well-loved by their patients and the San Luis Obispo community at large.
From the beginning, this has truly been a family dental practice. Many patients have shared stories of the kindness and skills of both Dr. Quist’s. Even now, there are many patients who have grown up in this office and have only ever received their dental care here.
Dr. Stephen Quist retired in 2018 and sold his practice to Dr. Jessica Smith. Although he no longer practices, Dr. Quist still owns all three medical suites, with only one of them still being used for dentistry. Stephen Quist still resides in San Luis Obispo and can often be seen around town actively participating in various local organizations and charities. When he's not traveling with his lovely wife, Cynthia, he dedicates his time to making a positive impact in the community.
After a year as the new practice owner, Dr. Jessica Smith made the decision to rebrand the dental office as Feather Dental and incorporate a more feminine touch. The name was carefully selected to embody the gentle qualities and ongoing kindness that the practice consistently demonstrated towards its patients.
